Our latest wing-tagged Golden Eagle (GOEA) encounter 1/02/13

Posted by admin in Untagged

Our latest wing-tagged Golden Eagle (GOEA) encounter is part of our mark/re-capture project on GOEAs captured during fall migration near Lincoln, MT.
The trail cam image shows eagle tag #195 feeding on a deer carcass near McCoy, CO. The camera was set-up by a private landowner who contacted CO Parks & Wildlife to learn more about the tagged eagle. GOEA 195 looked feather perfect (excepting the blue wing tags, of course).

Ospery with transmitter spotted in Mexico 9/13/12

Posted by admin in Untagged

One of our female osprey carrying a satellite transmitter left her breeding area near Florence, MT on 9/1. On 9/11, she was approximately 110 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico. She travelled a distance of nearly 2,000 miles in just 10 days. Her mate and two young, who also have satellite transmitters, are still hanging out near their nest in Florence. We'll be posting regular updates on the locations of this and one other osprey family throughout the migration season.

Osprey with blue bands on both legs at Lee Metcalf NWR ‏ 8/17/12

Posted by admin in osprey , lee metcalf wildlife refuge

Blue35 was photographed by Kim Smith 8/17/12 at Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge. This Osprey (female?) USGS banded number 0928-11818 [C35] was banded 8/4/10 as nestling at Stone Container on Pond "18", just west of Missoula. We know we have color banded Osprey in the region, as we have roughly 75 auxiliary marked as nestlings. This is the first confirmed encounter to an individual adult that is alive and well. No doubt there are others along the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers. Next spring we'll make a concerted effort to re-sight some :)

Spring Migration

Posted by tjveto in Untagged

A bluebird day in the field resulted in the banding of four American Kestrels, and a steady flight of migrant raptors over the MPG ranch. Counters observed over 50 migratory raptors with 12 different species being represented, including all the members of the falcon family except the Gyr. This brings out season total to just over 650 migrants!
