RESEARCH PROJECTSWhen RVRI first started out, we focused nearly all our research effort on our fall migration studies. However, our studies now includes spring, summer and winter work as well. Our Swainson’s Hawk and Osprey Projects keep us busy throughout most of the spring and summer. Come mid August we are gearing up for our Fall Migration Monitoring and Banding Projects on the Rocky Mountain Front. Shortly there after, we are back at it, collecting data on wintering eagles which takes us into March and the peak spring migration season for Golden Eagle heading back to their northerly breeding grounds. Indeed it has become a year-round endeavor. From 2001 through 2007, we have banded over 600 raptors, of 15 different species, including 134 Golden Eagles and 120 Northern Goshawks. We are proud of the fact, that with the exception of our pilot 2005 Nora Ridge season, we annually band more Golden Eagles than all North American ridgeline banding stations combined! In 2007 among other accomplishments, we had our most productive fall migration season to date, banding over 35 Golden Eagles and fitting two adults with satellite transmitters. In addition, we had our first standardized migration count conducted by veteran raptor migration experts Fred and Cathy Tilly. Fred and Cathy counted from Sept 15 – Oct 29, 2,672 raptor, including 1,616 Golden Eagles.
